Kind of nuts that the Austrailians didn't think that gust was a big deal and this was unearthed so many years later. You'd think that someone would have looked into this sooner to see if this was indeed a record.

Another thing, those must be some very well built anemometers to be able to withstand those kind of winds! I wonder what the threshold values are on those things.

I thought the fastest wind recorded in the world was the May 3, 1999 Tornado in OKC.I have read where a DOW recorded a wind speed of 317 mph at the apex of the cell as it roared in the city.Can anyone confirm this.

I believe it is because the wind speed recorded by the DOW was not right at ground level but "looking" up into the massive tornado a ways, just like any radar would. That and the fact that the DOW recorded wind speed is not a direct measurement of the wind itself.
